January 2021

by: Kim Spiece

Winter has arrived and we've had our first taste of it December 16-17th, receiving 9 inches of the white stuff here in Gilbertsville, PA. Totals were up and down the scale in many different regions. It was considered our first Nor'easter of the season.  Yes, it is the coldest season of the year in the polar and temperate zones caused by the axis of the Earth oriented away from the sun.  It will be interesting to see what type of weather we continue to have going into the New Year.

As I write this article here at the end of 2020, I ponder what is in store for us in the coming year, 2021. Will restrictions still be in place, now that they are administering the Covid-19 vaccine? Will we continue to see the cancellation of events in the coming months? How soon can we go to car shows, again? I will continue to hope we have a better, more productive car show season and I know many of us are looking forward to that!

As we watch the famous ball in New York Times Square drop on New Year's Eve and make our traditional resolutions to continue good practices, change an undesired behavior or trait, accomplish a personal goal, or improve our lives with a fresh new start for the new year, take the time to reflect what we all have experienced over the past 12 months and consider what is to come in the next 12 months.

For New Year's, I wish for all of us to be a little more compassionate, spread happiness and joy, love one another, have patience, and be KIND to each other!   Covid-19 has really changed how we see, live and act in our lives. Live life the best you can, enjoy while you are able to, stay healthy and safe my friends! Happy New Year's to all !!

2021 Amelia Island Concours

March 4- 7th
The Amelia Island Concours is a go for 2021! Now in its third decade, the The Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance is among the top automotive events in the world. Held the first full weekend in March, "The Amelia" draws more than 300 rare vehicles from collections around the world to The Golf Club of Amelia Island at Summer Beach and The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. At this time, plans are being made to carry on with the original dates of March 4th through the 7th. We have attended this world-class event for the last 15 years, often showing our client's cars or just to enjoy the Amelia experience. This year, Lyn St. James is the Honeree and Hispano-Suiza is one of the featured Marques! If you have yet to attend, Amelia Island is a celebration of the automobile like none other. This is one for your bucket list!

1923 Ford Fire Truck

by: Barb Plant

This month we are featuring this wonderful little 1923 Ford Model TT fire truck. Thisis a true 'bucket-brigade' fire truck as it has no pump and it would have had a water tank in the rear. When it arrived at the scene the firemen would have lined up and started filling buckets from the tank on the back.
It is here for some driveability issues related to the Ford Vaporizer carburetor. This type of carb was only used for a few years on Ford T and TT vehicles. This carb used a hot plate, heated by exhaust gases, to vaporize the fuel, which would then be drawn into the engine. Many of these units were replaced by standard vacuum carbs.

Unfortunately due to  the state's new Covid-19 restrictions, all December events were cancelled.
AACA Museum
December 12th

by: Kim Spiece

On December 12th, I received an email as I'm sure many of you have as well from the AACA Museum, Inc announcing a mandated temporary closure incorporated by Pennsylvania state Governor Tom Wolf.  The new restrictions on specific businesses and public gatherings  went into effect and to last hopefully only until January 4th as proposed.  The museum is asking for continued support to assist with ongoing operational expenses. They also would like to thank everyone for new and renewal memberships, contributions, and gift shop purchases.
Did You Know?
1950's-1960's LaDawri

by: Kim Spiece

In keeping with the theme of  "alternative cars", today we learn of the LaDawri.

In the 1950's and 1960's California,  was the hotbed of retrofit fiberglass auto body manufacturing. One of the best known and most successful was LaDawri Coachcraft found in Los Angeles.  They catered to the DIY custom car market by offering a variety of body choices for a broad range of available chassis. The most popular model was their Conquest, a modern 2-3 passenger sleek roadster.  They were buildable using either 2 bucket seats or a 3-person bench seat. The engines and power trains differed depending on what the builder chose to use. The chassis was designed for installation on a 100 inch chassis typically found with a Willys, Jeepster or Henry J.   They were priced and sold for the body kit only; you had to find and buy a donor vehicle.
