Vargo Dragway

November 4

Vargo Dragway wasn't just a racetrack; it was people who had a passion for their cars. Local teenagers had no other affordable and legal place to race, to hang out and to benefit by learning from adults that they would listen to and learn from. The first event was held April 24, 1960 as an 1/8 mile drag strip. From there, Vargo became a major track hosting many of the "greats" such as Ronnie Sox, Fred Bear, K.S. Pittman, Dave Hales, just to name a few.  The last race was run in 1969. National figures and National Records were a part of the tracks' history. The Annual Car Show on Elephant Road in Perkasie, PA brings out the "good ole boys" from days past to remember the good times they had there and to continue to show off their cars and talk to the "youngens".

1910 Pickard

by: Ross Belovich, Shop Manager

Our newest technician, Michelle, is working on removing the intake on the 1910 Pickard. This Pickard is one of 62 to be produced and the only one known to still exist. It is an air-cooled inline 4-cylinder engine that requires hand cranking to start. After being out to shows it is getting some maintenance and welcome improvements.

In the Rearview

September and October are always a popular time of the year for car shows as the heat of summer gradually gives way to the cooler Autumn days. We attended many events and campaigned our clients's 1938 Jaguar SS100 at 5 consecutive events in four states; Ocean Grove NJ, the Radnor Concours at the Radnor Hunt Club in PA, St Michael Concours in Maryland, The Classics at Brantwyn in Delaware, and finally Hershey back in PA! Sit back and enjoy our description and photos of each of these great events along with several others that we attended during this season.

The Classics at Brantwynn

by: Michael Engard

This year we attended the tenth annual Vintage and Super Car Tour and Show at the magnificent Brantwyn Mansion in Wilmington, Delaware. This event benefits the Kennett Symphony of Chester County. We brought our client's 1938 Jaguar SS100 and participated in the Grand Parade of spectacular automobiles and motorcycles onto the Brantwyn grounds. Each car pauses in front of the mansion to be introduced by the event organizer, Paul Merluzzi to the guests who are sipping “Lamborghini Bellinis”. The cars proceed to assigned spots in the garden at the rear of the mansion and remain on display while the guests enjoy brunch, drinks, and chatting with the car owners.

2017 Duryea Days in Boyertown

by: Kim Spiece

The 52nd Annual Duryea Days was held once again at Boyertown Community Park over the Labor Day holiday weekend. The weather didn't work with us so well, as we had a few showers throughout the morning which kept the attendance very low, sadly.  This event brought in vehicles that represented all eras, from brass to muscle cars, hot rods, trucks and motorcycles. There were several flea market vendors offering a variety of automotive items and memorabilia.  Included in admission to the show was a tour of The Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles that several spectators and participants visited via trolley. Pollock Auto Restoration was on hand with a show-winning 1958 Chevy Impala that is currently for sale.

Quarter Aces South Mountain Raceway

by: Kim Spiece

Quarter Aces Glory Days were held at the South Mountain Raceway, Biglerville, Pa  the weekend of September 9-10th. It was a two-day event filled with many activities including Nostalgia Drags Exhibition Runs, Funny Cars,  Slingshot Dragsters, Cruise In Car Show and American Graffiti Movie Night. Several vendors were on hand as well.  Saturday afternoon included a tour of the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing located a few miles away in York Springs, Pa. It is open to the public with many race cars on display as well as hundreds of racing artifacts. Everyone working at the museum are volunteers and there is no admission fee, they only ask for a donation.
Below are photos taken from inside the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing. It is a permanent gallery on the history of Motor Racing in the eastern US. For anyone interested in auto racing I highly recommend visiting this museum as it was very informative, to see how things changed and transformed through the ages.

Radnor Concours

by: Dave Hutchison

The Radnor Concours weekend was filled with spectacular weather, wonderful cars and the people who love them! This year, Radnor featured the race cars of Roger Penske, Auburn, Cord and Duesenberg, Abarth and Century Cycles.
Concours President, Tom Ross said " we were very excited about the features this year and thrilled that two race cars came in from the Penske collection in Michigan. David Donahue attended along with his father's 1973 911 RSR IROC Porsche. Penske also sent the Indy car that was part of a front row sweep of the 1988 Indy 500!  Ross went on to add, "we also received very good feedback from many first time attendees, one of which drove 34 hours from Texas!" This Radnor Concours exceeded all our expectations!
A fantastic collection of Pedal Cars, tractors, and the CCCA classics were in attendance. The show spectator attendance was good and the field was full but not too crowded so you could get to see every car. We were very pleased to see our client's 1938 Jaguar SS100 win Best in Class!  We think he and his wife were very pleased, too!
Best in Show this year went to Richard and Helen Harding for their 1928 Auburn 8-88 Speedster and Best of Show Sports was won  by John and Suzanne Campion with their 1983 Lancia-Abarth 037. Another fantastic Radnor Concours in the history books. We look forward to this fantastic Concours in 2018.

St Michael's Concours

by: Mike Engard

The 2017 St. Michael's Concours d'Elegance returned to the Inn at Perry Cabin for a really gorgeous day in September. The Motor Tour, which started out from the Classic Motor Museum in St. Michael's, MD, was the highlight of the weekend.  We drove Chris Prior's 1938 Jaguar SS100 to the Easton Airport for a display of antique airplanes and WW2 birds. We had the great fortune to get permission to photograph the SS100 in front of a Supermarine Spitfire that were both built in Coventry, UK.  The owner and his wife enjoyed motoring about the St. Michael's peninsula all weekend.
Best in Show award went to the handsome 1921 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost.

Fall Carlisle

September 27-30
by: Kim Spiece

Last show of the season here at Carlisle Fairgrounds, a 150-acre site, which has played host to thousands of collector and classic automotive enthusiasts over the years. People travel from all over the globe to buy, sell, and celebrate all things automotive. there were over 8100 vendor spaces that guests could explore and be able to purchase any of the 2000 vehicles that were in the car corral.

AACA Eastern Regional Hershey Fall Meet

October 4-7
by: Kim Spiece and Dave Hutchison

We doubled our tent size to accommodate the four cars that we had on display from Ragtops & Roadsters and Pollock Auto Restoration. Fall Hershey is the largest antique automobile show and flea market in the United States and this year we had four dry warm days with only a shower one evening.
Early Saturday morning, after 30 plus years of ownership, the owner of the 1937 Railton Fairmile drove his car onto the show field for the first time! Later that night he and his wife attended the awards dinner and they received a First Junior AACA award.

As you can see in the photos from the car corral, there was a mixture of different marques, many from the '50s and '60s.

The AACA Eastern Division National Fall Meet at Hershey, PA consisted of over 9000 flea market spaces, over 1000 car corral spaces and approximately 1500 show cars.

1.) Dad made a couple of custom rides for the kids!

2.) Rust never sleeps and it always shows up at Hershey.

Each year the show grows, attracting more visitors from all over the United States and many countries throughout the world. We met enthusiasts from Belgium, Norway and Sweden.
