SHOPTALK

In Memory of: John Shiban

We lost a friend. John Shiban passed on August 24th after a short illness. Many of us were first introduced to John back in 2008 when Pollock Auto Restoration changed owners and John came along with the new Pollock. He was full of Pollock stories from years gone by, always a soft spoken man who soon earned the nickname "The Professor". When he saw anyone come by, he was always eager to show you his latest creation! His attention to detail was second to none and he always knew the right way do the job. John had been a "trimmer" all his life and for over 50 years worked in one way or another finishing some of finest classic cars ever built. He always said "The trimmer is always the first man in and the last man out". He had a work area in the shop that sparkled as he kept it ultra clean with baby wipes! Some of John's work included Packard, Duesenburg, Cadillac, Bugatti, and most recently, AC Cars, Railton, Hudson to name a few. His portfolio book covered decades, had dozens stories as his passion for his work will live on in those pages. His craftsmanship and his gentle manor will be missed in the "Trim Shop" at Pollock for many years to come.... Rest in Peace John.

Post Sales Push Monterey Auction Results Past $400 Million

Hold Your Breath/Make a wish/Count to three; I've Got a Golden Ticket;

Come with me and you'll be
In a world of pure imagination
Take a look and you'll see
Into your imagination

These lyrics from the film "Wily Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" pretty much sum up what attending this year's auctions in Monterey was like this time around.

Just walking into the RM Sotheby's auction preview was a mind-blowing experience; I literally felt like a kid entering the Wonka factory for a tour. It was so overwhelming that it was almost impossible to know where to look due to the visual overload of so many of the cars that dreams are made of. Never before in my 16 years of attending, bidding at and reporting on collector car auctions have I seen so many varied, rare, significant and desirable cars on sale in one place anywhere in the world. No matter what you wanted, chances are there was an example for sale at this year's Monterey auctions. If you had the opportunity to attend the previews or the sales themselves, then you most definitely had a Golden Ticket to collector car paradise.
