Winter? Are you sure?

by, Kim Spiece

Groundhog day has arrived and Punxsutawney Phil has predicted an early Spring, he did not see his shadow. January went by with little to no accumulation of snow, surprisingly for this time of year and for our area. We've even had some spring-like weather with temperatures up into the high 50's and 60's. But winter is far from over so keep that in mind when you're out driving this winter.
We at Pollock advocate driving your car as often as possible. There are enough good weather days that you can get your car out at least once a month during the winter.  Here are some essential tips for safer winter driving.  Check your battery, front and rear defrosters, and fill up with washer fluid and antifreeze, Inflate tires to the correct pressure and keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid frozen fuel lines.
If you're out traveling on the roads after a snow fall, be sure to get your vehicle washed thoroughly especially underneath as seen in the left picture below; the vehicle was taken to a car wash with undercarriage washing and there is still plenty of salt accumulated that did not come off, and that can lead to a major rust issue over time. Always carry a survival kit in your vehicle because you just never know. Blankets, water proof boots, gloves, hats, a small shovel, jumper cables, and a little bit of sand or kitty litter can come in handy in the event of a storm popping up.
Always be prepared, always be safe. As i am fond of hearing from older folks, "drive it til it dies" and "enjoy today because tomorrow is not promised"....

1952 Chevrolet 3100 Pickup Advance-Design

January 2020

by: Kim Spiece

This 1952 Chevy pickup truck came to us for a full Resto-Mod restoration.  We are finishing up with minor touches for a finished product. The paint scheme is beautiful and the work is excellent, something we are very proud of. Even though it generally is not our main focus to build street/hot rods, it is something we are quite capable of doing as you can see by the photos.

1967 Chevy Camaro RS Convertible

January 2020

by: Kim Spiece

This 1967 Chevy Camaro RS Convertible came into the shop for a motor conversion; new transmission, rear, disc brakes, suspension, upgraded mechanical modifications. It's still a work in progress but coming along nicely.

1955 Jaguar XK140 Fixed Head Coupe

January 2020

by: Kim Spiece

Currently in the shop is a 1955 Jaguar XK140. A tree fell on this car many years ago and our first task was to repair the crushed roof and window frames. After paint we started on the mechanical restoration. Up next is wiring, interior and chrome as you can see by the photos. This will be completed in the near future.

Cabin Fever

January 17-18th, 2020

by: Mike Engard

When I attended the most recent meeting of the Pottstown Region of the AACA we were discussing events.  It was recommended to me that I attend the Cabin Fever Expo & Auctions in Lebanon, Pa January 17 and 18, 2020.

This was a surprise and a delight as the variety of displays were amazing. The two-day auction included toy trains, mechanical scale models, industrial items, signs and literature. There were about 75 gas and steam engines including many "hit-n-miss" engines that anyone could bid on and own.

There were many exhibitors showing finely crafted and detailed power-driven projects.  The craftsmanship in these little mechanical marvels was very impressive. There were many vendors selling tools, machines, and kits to build the wonderful miniature machines.

There was a "working quarry" that had dozens of RC dump-trucks, trailers, backhoes, bulldozers, and cranes excavating and hauling 4 large piles of dirt and gravel. There was also a large "pond" with RC boats sailing about and tug-boats pushing ships into the scale harbor.

For something to do on a snowy or cold winter day, this was great entertainment. For next year's expo, January 16-17, 2021 go to the Cabin Fever Facebook page and check out the videos of the 2020 event, or call 1-800-789-5068 for more information.

Old Time Touring Club

January 2020

by: Mike Engard

The OTTC is the local regional chapter (along with the Susquehanna Valley Region) of the Horseless Carriage Club of America. The HCCA welcomes anyone interested in pre-1916 vehicles.

On a warm, beautiful January afternoon more than 2/3rds of the OTTC club membership met at the Limerick Diner in Limerick, PA to elect officers, discuss plans and events for 2020 and, of course to enjoy good food and happy conversation.  Several members arrived in their brass-era cars, with the tops down, enjoying the spring-like weather.  I'll bet they're glad they didn't put their cars up in storage for the winter!

There was discussions about many events, including national and other club brass-era events, as well as local OTTC events in Ocean Grove, Leighton, Newtown Square, and Phoenixville. The OTTC Spring Dust Off Tour and Brandywine River Museum tour were planned.  Also, Pollock Auto Restoration will be running the Fall Frosty Tour on Saturday, October 24th, 2020. Watch this newsletter for more information as we get closer to the date.

If you would like more information about these events or you are interested in getting involved in the OTTC, contact Shawn Achtel at ottcmembership@yahoo.com.

I learned the other day about another museum in our area, the Mack Truck Museum in Allentown, Pa. It is a non-profit corporation founded in 1984 that showcases preserving Mack history with build records, parts and service information, drawings, photos, vintage truck models, and of course life size restored models. It looks to be an interesting place to visit on a cold winter day. To learn more about Mack Trucks and it's long standing history since 1900, plan a road trip. Museum hours are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00-4:00pm. Each tour is limited to 10 people and there is no admission fee, only a donation request per visitor. For more information visit their website at:
https://www.macktruckshistoricalmuseum.org/.
